My husband got us tickets to see the Hold Steady in November. He’s seen them live twice. I’ve heard their CDs, but I don’t get out much. This will be the first big (grown-up) concert for us as a couple in quite some time, and it got me thinking about the live music we’ve seen over the years.
If someone knew me strictly by my concert attendance over the last 15 to 20 years, I could easily be mistaken for a Baby Boomer. I’ve seen the Grateful Dead (numerous times), James Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sting, Jimmy Buffet, Nanci Griffith, John Hiatt, Jefferson Starship/Airplane/Whathaveyou, America (that one was FREE, otherwise I would not have gone), the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. Sure, I’ve also seen some artists who would be considered more GenX — like REM, Jill Sobule, the Indigo Girls, Lisa Loeb, They Might Be Giants (a kids’ show, but still…), Everclear — but overall, my concert experiences make me seem much older than I am.
And did I ever tell you about the time I saw the Statler Brothers?
My husband swears that once we find a reliable babysitter, we’re going to make monthly outings into the city to see live music of my choosing. I’ve decided we need to get out and experience “what the kids are into” these days. I told him I want to go to shows where we’re the oldest people there, shows like (and sadly, in an attempt to rattle off some artists and bands we should be checking out, the only name I could come up with was) Panic! at the Disco.
So who do you recommend?

My life list of concerts is short and eclectic: Queen, Roger Whittaker, Oingo Boingo, Lyle Lovett, The Police, The Chieftains, The BusBoys, The Dixie Dregs.
If I could see a few of today’s bands, I’d certainly want to see: The Flaming Lips, David Mead, Ben Folds, Fountains of Wayne. I’ve heard those are all fun shows.

Y’know, based on my one Hold Steady show, I wasn’t that much older than “the kids,” and I definitely wasn’t the oldest guy (or gal) in the room.
The Hold Steady will kick your (and your husband’s) relative butts. (I’m probably gonna catch ‘em on that same tour — I hear Art Brut’s worth seeing, too.)
Quite honestly, I think what keeps people our age and parental status from going is the late hours — who can get a 12-year-old babysitter to stick around until 1 AM? Man, I miss First Ave. in Minneapolis and their 8 PM main-act start times so much more now.

I agree. Late hours…ugh. I went to see Badly Drawn Boy not too long ago. Great show. Really terrific. I could hardly stand up straight & keep my eyes open by the time it hit midnight. And by that time, the band was just getting warmed up. Same with Rachel Yamagata. I should have had a shot of espresso around 10pm. I recommend both shows, though.
This is why my own shows always start at 7:30 or 8pm. Because I’m just that lame.

Hi there,
The Mrs. and I still get out quite a bit to see live music, I cannot imagine the day I am unable to do so. Music was my first passion and remains close to the top of the list (pushed down a bit thanks to these darn children).
We just saw Bishop Allen (from Brooklyn). Very clever lyrics and catchy tunes that will be stuck in your heard for a while. Their record “The Broken String:” is very good.
We are heading to Philly on Saturday to see my favorite band, called Okkervil River. Their latest “The Stages Names” is a masterpiece, as far as I am concerned. A lovely looking record as well (a band that still takes pride in the presentation even in the digital download era.)
For something closer to (unplugged/ Freewheelin’) Dylan, check out Elvis Perkins. His debut “Ash Wednesday” is lovely and they are a wonderful live band.
I really could offer up dozens of selections, depending on your style and mood. Would be happy to make a mix-CD for you as well. Email me, outwiththekids_at_gmail_dot_com
I love turning people on to great music.

OH! Bishop Allen.I love them. I think I did a post on them at small ages some time ago. They are rad and are coming to SF soon. I missed them last time, but I won’t this time….
